5 tips to help you navigate eczema skins in the spring.
1. Clothing- keep it cool.
We tend to over dress children in the mornings. Better to avoid jumpers or heavy sweaters and wear long sleeved t-shirts. Make sure by midday to remove that extra layer of clothing. By then the warmth will start and the extra sweat generated from the clothing won’t irritate any eczema patches or trigger new ones.
2. Hydration- on the inside and outside.
Drinking enough water is essential for good health and keeping the skin barrier optimal. However, helping the skin barrier externally is also necessary to prevent and treat flare ups. Use your favourite natural based and organic eczema creams or lotions throughout the day to prevent the skin from dehydrating and of course keep the fluids up also.
3. Essential Fatty Acids- the healthy oils.
Healthy oils are often deficient in our little ones. Along with hydration getting enough healthy oil is beneficial for the functioning of the skin barrier. Consider it like a moisturiser but from the inside out. Done correctly this step will improve eczema by leaps and bounds. Want to know more about what are the healthy oils? 4. Spring Clean
Eczema is triggered by various factors internal and external. Environmental triggers such as; dust, dust mites, and animal hair accumulate in the home. Regular cleaning is a helpful habit but deep cleaning is essential to reduce the load of environmental triggers for eczema skins. Remember to air the house often and use non-toxic cleaning products, without essential oils to help during this spring season.
5. Spring Food
Over the winter we tend to eat richer and heavier meals. It’s natural to start lightening our food choices to include more raw salads and fruits.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine this will help “cool” the skin down and will reduce eczema flares caused by “heat” accumulating in the body. How much raw food? Aim for up to approximately 2 cups worth for a child up to aged 5- 10. Above 10 add another cup. If you’re an adult minimum 3 cups daily of raw vegetables. Of course if you have eczema there is no limits to how much raw vegetables you can have!
